Everyone thinks of a different country when they start thinking about where they would like to spend their summer holiday. But some are clearly more popular than others.
Heathrow Airport enjoys its status as a busy airport that provides the flights that holidaymakers are looking for each and every year. If you live nearby, you’ll find that there are plenty of places you can visit simply by hopping on a plane from Heathrow.
And one of the most popular ones is undoubtedly Spain.
Where is Spain?
Spain is situated in Europe, and is bordered by Portugal on the western side and France on the right hand part of the northern edge. The capital of Spain, Madrid, sits virtually right in the middle.
On the northern, eastern and southern edges there are plenty of coastal towns to visit, and some of these certainly make the list of the most popular locations.
Spain also benefits from having plenty of airports that are conveniently located for the most popular destinations.
Why should you visit Spain?
You could easily call Spain a country of many characters. It has dynamic cities for those who like a taste of culture and history in their holiday. And there are plenty of resorts by the sea that offer the traditional beach holiday for those who like to top up their tan.
The real attraction of Spain is that it does everything very well. Families with children will find the perfect locations to stay in, as will younger people who like to party the whole night through!
What main areas are there to stay in?
Valencia has a unique position on the coast of Spain. If you look inland you will see mountains, and looking out to sea presents you with a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea.
Slightly further south is Alicante, a traditional hotspot for those looking for a cheap and pleasant Spanish holiday. If you follow the coastline round you will also come across Almeria and Malaga – two more popular destinations that are enjoyed by thousands of holidaymakers every year.
Of course the coast does attract people for the stunning beaches it offers, but when you visit regions such as Andalucia you will see that there is more here than just sunbathing. Water sports in particular will be a delight to get involved with.
But of course there is more to enjoy than that. Spain is famous – or perhaps that should be infamous – for bullfighting. Seeing one of these events is not for the faint hearted, although it does give you a unique insight into a pastime that continually takes place in the country.
A little more down to earth is the flamenco dancing you can enjoy. And there cannot be many people who don’t come back from a holiday in Spain without packing a pair of castanets into their luggage! These are associated with flamenco dancing, although not everyone uses them.
You can enjoy this type of activity in many locations all over Spain, so no matter where you go you will be able to enjoy a taste of the real Spain. Of course many of the well known locations such as Alicante and the Costa del Sol are set up primarily to attract holidaymakers. You may see a very different side of Spain here than you would if you travelled to one of the cities.
What type of holidays is it good for?
Spain does offer a myriad of opportunities and enjoyment for everyone wanting to take a holiday there. Those wanting a traditional and well priced beach holiday will no doubt head to the usual haunts.
But if you want something a little more unusual you would be well advised to stay away from the popular areas and go somewhere that is a little less suited to holidaymakers. There is also the option of taking a long weekend and visiting a city instead of going to the beaches. Barcelona has to be one of the main cities to add to your list – but even here you might be surprised to learn that it has a number of beaches you can visit!
The capital of Madrid benefits from some wonderful historic sights if you are thinking of a city break rather than a beach holiday. As you can see, Spain can offer plenty for everyone, no matter what it is you like to do on holiday.
In conclusion
Spain has been a real favourite for many people over the years, and there is no reason to suspect that it will change anytime soon. The key to its success is undoubtedly the fact that it is something of a chameleon among countries. It can offer the basic beach holiday, and it can also offer a break steeped in history for those that seek it.
As such, you shouldn’t take this country at face value, as there is a lot you could miss.
