Destination Portugal

Seeing as Heathrow is a major airport, it’s not surprising to learn that you can fly to all kinds of great destinations from there.

Many of these destinations are top holiday spots, and if you are thinking of booking a foreign holiday now, then you should think about using Heathrow as your choice of airport to get there.

But where should you go? Let’s focus on Portugal, and learn more about what it has to offer.

Where is Portugal?

Portugal is a thin strip of a country that runs down the western side of Spain. Many of the popular areas for staying in on holiday are along the southern edge of the country. This makes the main airport, Faro, very convenient since it is situated near the middle of this southern section.

It also offers a fairly short flying time from Heathrow Airport into Portugal, making it a popular choice for many holidaymakers. TAP Air Portugal flies to Porto in Northern Portugal, but you can catch a connecting flight if you want to travel further south.

Why should you visit Portugal?

It has a lot to offer for those who like sunny holidays and plenty of beaches to relax on. It is renowned for having a lot of character and many people prefer it to Spain, as it has a unique character that cannot be mistaken.

The country also has a lot of history, and this is one of the reasons why it is so attractive to many people looking for a little more than a standard beach holiday.

What main areas are there to stay in?

The main area that everyone heads to is the Algarve. This is the southernmost chunk of the country, having Faro as its airport and offering plenty of wonderful locations to stay in.

It also benefits from a good array of beaches, and while it is perfectly set up for those looking for a great holiday, you are never too far away from the historic side of the country either.

Take Portimao, for example. Here you can enjoy the sight of fishermen bringing in their day’s haul. The cluster of boats offers an alternative scenic view for those keen on taking photos, while you are still never that far away from seeing a nice beach or two – principally Praia da Rocha.

This is a long beach that is a favourite among visitors, and it’s just as good for an evening stroll after dinner as it is for soaking up the sun on during the day.

Praia da Luz is another popular destination for people heading to Portugal, and once again the marriage of old and new is clear to see. Roman ruins sit side by side the modern cluster of bars and restaurants that are frequented by visitors, so you won’t be bored or struggling to find something to do.

If you would prefer a different style of holiday you could head to the north of the country instead. Many people choose to rent villas or other smaller accommodation in areas such as Porto for example. This is one of the largest cities in Portugal, so if you are looking for a busier time rather than simply a beach holiday, this might suit you better.

What type of holidays is it good for?

There’s no doubting the ability of Portugal to satisfy anyone with a lust for a great beach. The Algarve in particular is dotted with some terrific beaches. Try Albufeira, Lagos and Carvoeiro for example. All of these areas are very popular with visitors, and offer a wide range of things to do as well as sunbathing.

The country is also popular with those who like to play golf. There are some great courses dotted around the country, and you can appreciate the stunning scenery as well as trying to improve your handicap!

There is no doubt that the historic side of the country is there for all to see. This means that Portugal is in the prime position of being able to offer outstandingly versatile holidays which never get dull. It is this versatility which makes this destination a popular one every single year. From Roman ruins to miles of beaches, there is something here for everyone to enjoy.

It is also a good destination for those who have young children. There is enough to do to make sure that the kids are amused as well as the adults!

In conclusion

It’s easy to see why Portugal is a firm favourite among holidaymakers. There is no reason to suppose that this won’t continue to be the case in years to come either.

What’s more, it’s easily reached by hopping on a flight from Heathrow. All of which makes this destination a serious consideration for your next holiday abroad. You’ll certainly never regret going!
