Destination Bulgaria

People are boarding flights from Heathrow Airport to various destinations across the whole of Europe every single day. Some of those destinations will no doubt be more popular than others – but there is one or two that you might overlook in favour of a more traditional and more popular holiday.

One of these examples is Bulgaria – and you are about to find out lots of reasons why you should think about flying there from Heathrow.

Where is Bulgaria?

Bulgaria is located in the south eastern corner of Europe. Its northern border is shared with Romania, while the southern border is shared with Turkey and Greece.

Two other countries share its western border – these are Serbia and Macedonia. But the entire eastern side of the country meets with the Black Sea, offering a chance of staying in some nice seafront locations when you pay a visit.

Why should you visit Bulgaria?

For starters it offers a different kind of holiday than you may have had in the past. Different countries always have a different way about them, and the Bulgarian landscape and way of living is very nice to experience for a week or two away.

It is also a constantly changing country, which enjoys mountains, lakes and vastly different types of weather. The snowfall during the winter months means you can head there for an unusual location for some skiing, while the nice warm summers are great if you want to soak up some sun.

What main areas are there to stay in?

Where you go will depend on what you want to do while you are there. For example if it is skiing you have in mind then make sure you head for Bansko in the south western corner of the country. This is the top resort in the country, and benefits from being at the foot of the Pirin Mountain.

You can also visit Borovets in the east, and Pamporovo further towards the south, for other opportunities to strap on your skis and try out the best mountains in Bulgaria.

But of course this is also a great country to visit at other times of the year. You may be surprised to learn that there are dozens of beaches down that eastern edge of the country. The beautifully named Golden Sands resort is very popular and very large, and it is well set up to receive plenty of visitors each and every year.

If capital cities are more your type of thing, be sure to visit Sofia. This is also the home of one of the main airports in the country. Sofia is in fact a good choice for a long weekend away, if you don’t have time for a proper holiday. There are plenty of sights to take in as well, such as the Eagle’s Bridge – so called because of the four bronze eagles that guard the bridge. The bridge is more than a century old.

Plovdiv is another worthwhile city to visit. It is to the south-east of Sofia, and it boasts a Roman amphitheatre among other things. The Archaeological Museum is another good way to take a look back at Bulgarian history, and it is worth spending a few hours browsing round its many delights.

What type of holidays is it good for?

Skiing holidays are becoming more popular in Bulgaria. And with enough mountains and resorts to keep all grades of skier amused, you can really look forward to the winter months here.

And of course it is good for relaxing holidays lounging on the beach too. During the summer months when the weather is pleasantly hot, the real action shifts towards the eastern side of the country. People flock to the beaches dotted along the length of the coast, so they can gaze out at the Black Sea and swim in its depths.

The landscape offers plenty of countryside to explore as well, so if you would like a more active holiday you can certainly have just that here. Walking and hiking are both very popular, whether you go for a guided tour or you head out on your own.

In conclusion

You will be pleased to know that you can fly to Sofia in Bulgaria from Heathrow Airport, which puts you down nice and close to the main skiing resorts. There are other airports in the country too of course, but connecting flights may be required to get to where you really want to be.

But wherever you are headed in Bulgaria, you will soon see that this somewhat unusual choice for a holiday is well placed. It offers a different seascape to look out on, and a location that has plenty to offer.

All you need to do is book that flight from Heathrow Airport to begin your holiday!
